rjts goodoral health is essential to a woman's overall well being to her an her unborn baby. joining us to tell us about this campaign. tell us about the campaign. it >>'s targeted to parents with children age 0 to 6 and pregnant women. particularly those parents who are labeled at risk. people who are eligible for medicade and are either on medicade, letting them know about the resources that are available. >> and let's ask you, dr. james, why is oral health -- it's always important to take care of your teeth but especially for
7:20 am
pregnant women. >> we consider oral health a part of general health. the healthier a woman is during her pregnancy, the healthier her pregnancy will be. so we really want to emphasize that itself's important to take care of your health during pregnancy. we found that among women who recently delivered half of them don't see a dentist. clearly not doing a good enough job of telling women to take care of your oral health during pregnancy. >> you hear a lot from doctors who say that their patients are turned away from dentists because they are told, we can't do that while you're pregnant. >> i think there is some misconception about the safety of oral health and doing any kind of procedures. i think the main misconception is among women themselves, they are scared to do anything during pregnancy, including taking care of their teeth. research shows that it's safe.
7:21 am
i can't emphasize that enough. >> let's go over some of the tips that we have for pregnant women. schedule the dental appointments during pregnancy, including cleanings. >> yes. definitely. if there's three things i could communicate. one, see your den at this time while pregnant. two, realize that it's safe to see your dentist while you're pregnant. three, if you're on medicade or eligible for medicade, seeing your dentist is covered during pregnancy. so you're able to actually go. it's not a problem. >> it's not a problem with human fluoride and eating healthy foods that promote good oral health. >> right. i mean, as far as mom goes, you know, she should start taking care of the teeth. soon as the baby is born, go in there and start cleaning the gum area. soon as the baby has a tooth, it's okay to brush that tooth even with fluoride toothpaste.
7:22 am
>> both of you, thank you very much for coming in. again, people want more information, they can go to healthy kids. that number is 1855-45-teeth or go to www poen healthy teeth.org. have a great day. don't go away. when we come back home depot is here to make your do it yourself projects easier. but first here's a look at some events going on around town.

>> welcome back. sam joins us with gift ideas for new homeowners. that could be the most popular projects this year. good morning. >> thank you for having me. >> it's great to have you. diy is the way to go. >> everybody's gonna try to make an attempt to fix it themselves these days. the way to go is cordless. everything is going to an 18 volt. also 20 volt battery, lithium latterries. they last for a very long time when you're using them to either put the screws in, putting them out, putting in little handles for your bathroom fixtures and stuff. >> let's run here. we've got a lot of drills on the table. along with some saws. >> they come as pro kits. this pro kit comes with a circular saw here.
7:26 am
we have a power drill. also comes with a work light. which is a very neat package. comes with a battery charger and two batteries. >> can i tell you how annoying it is with my drill that i have a cord on it? the cord, first of all, is like this long. yes, do i drill. i put up blinds and everything. right. to have a battery instead is fantastic. >> it's easier. you just have the charger plugged in. you don't have to go looking for a plug. hopefully the cord works. if it doesn't you got to find another one. it charges. indicator lights tell you when the battery is ready. within 30 minutes you plug it in, you use it. >> how do all these products compare with one another in terms of quality. >> they're basically running the same with an 18 volt. the only difference is the wall is a 20 volt charging system and xrath system. the torque is very compatible. light weight for yourself to use. the old conventional drill had
7:27 am
brushes in it and were very big and bulky. these are becoming brushless, which means less wear on equipment, which means it will last much longer. >> now, does home depot help you out if you need advice on how to use these products. >> we have the service dads. we also have associates in the aisle that can help you with all these products. >> would people really be giving these as gifts? i would like it, as a homeowner. >> i would enjoy it. lot of people are getting into do it yourself. instead of a regular screwdriver, you use a power tool and put a point in it. you just hold it and it tightens right up. it's great. the paint sprayers for your deck. if you need to stain your deck. instead of rolling it and brushing it, spray it. >> i'd say it beats a place setting any day. this is useless. >> we got paper plates. >> sounds good. sam, we appreciate you being
7:28 am
with us. >> thank you for your time. >> i think lisa wants to show us her favorite. which is the weed whacker. >> the weed whacker. >> all right, lisa. never thought i would say this. lisa robinson with the weed whacker. time 7:29. it is 59 degrees on tv hill. much more news coming up. you're watching 11 news sunday morning.

>> welcome back. thanks for joining us. our top stories in a moment. first let's take another look outside. >> little intimidated by you now that i have seen you use those power tools. >> i felt very powerful with it. >> you looked powerful. >> pretty exciting stuff. if you plan to be out doing yard work today, it's going to be spectacular. maybe the lawn is a little bit wet. it's 59 degrees. that's the coolest we've been since june 27th. we're starting to see a tran significant in the season. we head towards fall. we're having clearing skies right now. that's going to be the case into the afternoon. high pressure builds in. just a few clouds along the coast. few more clouds in the mountains where they may see a couple

showers. baltimore though does stay dry. highs in the upper 70s to low 80s. beautiful weather extends into the seven day. details coming up. time for a look at what's coming up on meet the press. david gregory joins us with a preview. good morning, david. >> good morning. big program. we've got mitt romney, first time on the program in the course of the campaign. and we really go through the big issues what a romney presidency would mean to the country and his view of the state of the campaign. >> incredible that we're less than two months away from the presidential election. any indication from either side post convention that their message will be tweaked at all especially when it comes to women and latinos? >> well, it certainly will in terms of outreach. pure outreach as they try to take their message forward. for mitt romney, he understands a couple of things. he comes into this after the convention as an underdog. he understands that the power of incumbency is quite strong. there's a feeling there will be enthusiasm coming out of the
7:32 am
democratic convention. he's got this jobs report, disappointing numbers. he wants to work that issue. to say there's is a better path that this president has not performed. essentially the message that he started this campaign with is what i think he'll end with. he's got to win on the idea that people reject the president because of the state of the economy. if he can't win that argument, he understands he can't win the race. >> and in this sitdown with mitt romney, did he reveal anything different to you that he struck you? >> yes. the one thing that will be quite striking to viewers is a disagreement with republican leaders. even his running mate over the deal that was made to extend the debt ceiling. that is to force automatic defense spending cuts. it was a window into his thinking about how to cut a deal with democrats to solve the debt problem. he is separating himself from even his running mate and other republican leaders on how to go about that. it goes to the larger point of,
7:33 am
would a president romney risk a revolt among conservatives to make a deal with the democrats? and if not, how does anything get done? i think it's going to be a big issue and something that stands out from the interview. >> now, let's talk about social media. what role do you think it will play in this election? >> well, i think it has a role among younger voters, particularly and the grass roots as well of the campaigns understand how to try to leverage it as a medium that can bring people together, can organize people, get them registered and also openly mobilize them to vote. >> david gregory live in washington. we appreciate your time as always. >> sure. >> you can watch meet the press later this morning on wbal tv following 11 news at 9 a.m. still ahead, the humane society joins us with a pet looking for a home. >> do you or someone you know need emotional help? the author this book joins us next. >> who doesn't need a little tlc

so often? the radar is going to ease into the upcoming work week. we have dry conditions.
7:35 am
7:36 am
>> good morning. we're starting you off with a live look at ocean city. this is our view from the grand hotel and spa. look at those waves churning about. that has to do with our latest tropical storm leslie. other than that, we have a few rain showers and the clouds still sitting over the coast. for the most part we're expecting the skies to clear out. looking at ac doppler. the rain is just starting to make its way off shore. if you're just at the beach, that's where you're seeing a little bit of rain down into virginia as well. but everybody else, dryer weather to start off the day. this is as our cold front moves off shore.
7:37 am
behind this cold front, we're seeing a noticeable drop in the temperatures. look at the chilly start to the day, at least if you consider it chilly in the 50s and 60s. i do want to mention leslie real quick. you can see the tropical storm churning in the atlantic. look how well off shore. we expect it to stay off shore. no impact to the east coast especially that we have rip currents possible as leslie continues to push the water to the coast. bermuda has to watch out. they could see not on strong surf but heavy rain and stronger winds. that's a concern for them today. the storm will be pulling away. i mentioned that it's cooler behind our front here in the east. it's 59 degreets right now. 55, 54 frederick. even as you look out into garrett county, 51 degrees. definitely starting to feel a lot like fall especially throughout these morning hours. the cold front is pushing up shore. we have some clouds in place across garrett county. there's instability today over
7:38 am
the mountain. they may see a couple showers. everyone else influenced by high pressure. that's what's going to keep the weather high for today. we have a cold front out of the plains. this moves into the east without the week. comes through dry. we don't even see clouds associated with it right now. doesn't have a lot of moisture with it. that means it's going reinforce the cool air rather than bring any thunderstorms. high pressure the big focus is the next couple days. it's going to be spectacular. we could see temperatures have dipped to 36 in international falls, minnesota. they're getting close to that freezing mark. 52 in minneapolis. even 54 in kansas city. our temperatures cool to start off the day. very pleasant into the afternoon. highs up near 79 for baltimore, 78 for ocean city and 68 in the mountains. ocean city, the rain clears out after the morning. but the mountains could see showers into the afternoon. baltimore state today, down to 60 downtown, 52 as you ged out
7:39 am
into the subbushes. then get near the airport, mid 50s over night. that's going to be a chili start to the day. we've got 53 tuesday, 50 on wednesday morning. may need to bust out the jackets this week. clear skies each and every day until the end of the week when we have a couple clouds. for now only a 20% chance for rain in the distant future. trying to convince a loved one that they need counselling is not as simple as an innovation like a television show. there's some very important considerations. joining me now a psychiatrist dr. mark comrade author of you need help. thank you for coming in. why did you write this sfwhook >> i wrote this book because i discovered in my own practice that there's so many people who need help that are not getting it. so many people have come to consult me, specifically not just about their own mental health problems but to get some advice and brainstorming about
7:40 am
how they can help somebody they love and care about to access the help they need. >> how does this help people to do that? >> my book really begins to talk about why people aren't showing up. why do we even need a book like this. the fact of the matter is, problems in mental health, problems with thoughts, feeling and behaviors are not benefitting from the treatment that they need. people are far more reluctant to show up for that kind of treatment. i talk about all the reasons why. and then i take them through a series of steps from the most encouraging conversations in which they really can learn how to actively listen and actively encourage through increasingly significant interventions and powerful intervehicle shuns that may involve tapping the unused power of their relationships. really people who care about us have the most power to convince us to get help. and this is one area in which it's very important not to remain silent, not to say, welsh
7:41 am
i don't want to mix in and i don't want to meddle. because it may be you are in the best position to help your loved ones. >> sometimes it's the family member that -- just the family member saying you need help. >> if that isn't happening, we have ways to help you go on to mobilize more allies, allies like clergy. allies like a person's primary care physician who could be a very important help. if necessary, i take you into the realm of mobilizing the authorities, if that's important, and i'd show you how to get the most out of it. >> you say in some ways more and more people seeking help, the help they need. lot of times people don't because mental health care is not covered under many insurance plans so they just can't afford it. >> right. sometimes that's a problem. however, the good news, is those of us in the mental health
7:42 am
profession are excited and encouraged by health care reform. because for the first time, it sets coverage for mental health to be on the exact same level as for physical health. if you have insurance that covers diabetes or infa see ma, this act says it's not to cover mental hel treatment in the same way. >> that means mental health professionals have to -- the other thing is many don't accept insurance. >> right. the book actually shows you some ways that you can access care that's affordable, even free, which there are many sources throughout the country. it's loaded and packed with resources. >> that's good to know. all right. thank you very much for coming in. good luck with the book. >> thank you. >> the book is you need help arch step by step plan to get loved ones to get counseling by dr. mark comrade. stay with us. the humane society joins us next with a pet looking for a good home. but first a look at last night's winning lottery numbers.

>> welcome back. joining us from the baltimore humane society, jen swanson. >> good morning. how are you? >> who did you bring here? >> he's skeeter. he's a terrier mix. he's a little high energy, so you need a rough and tumble kid or rough and tumble dog. he's great otherwise. >> you were saying he had a lot of energy. right when we got on camera, boy
7:46 am
did he calm down. >> he knows he's on tv. >> he's only 1. you said he looks scruffy. >> looks like a little old man. he's just a puppy. >> you guys have an e vented coming up that you're hoping to get the word out 37. >> october 6th from 10 to 5 at our location at 1601 nickdemis road. we have vendors and contests, trick contests, lots of rescues will be there with their adoptable pets. get about 6,000 people to the event. it's our biggest fund-raising community event of the year. >> it's really a chance for people to support you guys. >> it's a fantastic time. >> also, again, about skeeter, what kind of family would mix with him? >> he's good with kids. you do need a kid that can handle a little dog like this, who wants to just run and play. he does jump a little bit. he's a quick learner.
7:47 am
i had him out this morning. i just met him today for the first time. and you can see how quickly he acclimates. >> i know you've been overwhelmed with a lot of animals. >> we're experiencing a record high numbers being surrendered to us. it's been a burden so we really do need donations to come in. we don't get any funding from the government or humane society of the united states. we have to rely on generosity of private donors to keep our operations going. >> people hoping to come get animals, but the ten events like the one you have coming up in october really support your organization. for more information you can go to the baltimore humane society. 410-833-8848. the website is also on the screen. thank you. hope skeeter finds a home soon. >> thank you. time 7:47, 59 degrees on tv hill. coming up we're in the kitchen for sunday brunch.

7:53 am
hopefully he can return for the orioles if they make a playoff run. buck showalter knows the emotion of this one to lose a leader. game continues. jj hardy continuing with the parade. that one out to left. just past sue sau ki. made it 4-2. jim johnson for the save. derek jeter with two men on and nobody out, lays down a perfect bunt. bases loaded, zero outs. now we have one out. one run in. mark teixeira, if he beats out the double play, tie game. he slides into first, called out. replays would show most certainly on the yes network that teixeira was safe. the orioles finally got the happy end of a lousy call against the yankees. no apologizing for that. but trouble for nick markakis. >> it's an unfortunate
7:54 am
situation. the season's going to go on. i'll be here for the guys. i'll be supporting them. it's just a tough blow. >> for a guy who has worked so hard to get to that point, how about some maryland football saturday? playing in football at the lake against temple. looking for some revenge from last year's loss to the owls. perry hillis his first career touchdown pass. how about the rushing touchdown to join it? into the end zone he goes. maryland up 26-3 at the break. but back come the owls. fourth quarter, over the middle. great cut. jalen fitzpatrick. 29-27. but a 75-yard game sealing drive capped by justice picket. look at the touchdown run there. that earns randy edsell his first win streak as a head coach. maryland head coach of maryland. terps improve to 2-0 with a victory over temple. this is sports. we'll see you back here at 6:00.
